The Logic Of Wood burning Stoves

Wood burning stoves are appliances used for heating and cooking purposes using wood as fuel as well as wood pellets. The making of wood burning stoves involves a steel or cast iron fire chamber that is closed, a base of firebrick, and an air control system that is adjustable enough. A well-designed wood stove system can provide an even and steady heat for a living area in a more cost effective manner those other heating systems.

Stove pipes that are ventilated to a flue or chimney when once the fuel ignites will fill up with the hot gases of combustion. Since the gases from combustion are hotter than the outside air, they will be drawn up the chimney and to the outdoors. There is a damper located in the chimney that is used to control the airflow. The airflow is important to keeping the fire burning and moving the smoke and gases up and out of the chimney.

Many new stove designs will include an outside air source, which eliminates air having to come from the living space. This process creates a more efficiently run stove with less need for damper adjustment.

Regular ongoing maintenance of wood stoves is necessary for safety and operational purposes. Clearing ash from the stove, regular cleaning the stove chimney and pipes is very important. Creosote can build up in the chimney and can eventually cause spot fires that can spread to the structure of the home itself. Soot can block the flow of air through the stove and cause the backup of smoke.

The type of wood burnt in wood burning stoves is significant. Hardwoods and softwoods will provide approximately the same energy content, but the difference is noted in the rate that the firewood burns. Consequently hardwoods will take longer to burn, thus providing heat for a longer period of time. Softwood will burn more quickly and is more suitable for cooking.

It is also important to keep in mind that other combustibles such as coal, oil, kerosene, or gasoline must never be added to wood burning stoves as the fire produced may suddenly overwhelm the stove and the pipes and create a fire in the house.

With rising costs of energy many people have looked into alternative methods of heating their homes and the use of wood burning stoves has proven to be a very effective alternative. Today we find in over eight hundred thousand homes using this method of heating.

There are methods where a vogelzang wood stove review system can be used to heat an entire home, but most stoves are used as supplemental heating for sections of homes and living areas. Once a wood stove gets fired up and running the thermostat can be adjusted which will save overall heating costs.

The wood burning stoves available on the market can be purchase as stylish, attractive centrepieces in a room and can become a conversation piece, adding to the allure of the living space. If a person doesn’t mind the maintenance of running such a device, the savings and the steady heat can be a real advantage and a great alternative-heating source.

How To Choose The Best Wood Pellet Stove

Choosing The Best Wood Pellet Stove can be a pretty tough decision. You can not really just buy a stove and try it out just to return it because that is a huge hassle. Plus that does not sound like a fun or good time. That would be a waste of time and money or even gas when taking the stove back to the store.

To find the best pellet stove in the market you need to search around and look at prices, look at stores that sell them and you need to talk to professionals or call up friends that you know have pellet stoves and ask them how they like it. After that you decide on what you want and there you go, a really great pellet stove. Some of the top names include Harman, Quadra-Fire, Maxim Heat, and St Croix.

Talking to your friends and family can help you out immensely when buying anything. Based on peoples thoughts about these products can be helpful to you in many ways. They can tell you what they paid for them. They can tell you where they bought it. They can recommend a store to you. They could even go with you to help decide what is best for you, your family, and your house.

There are many kinds of stoves out there. There are cook stoves. There are kerosene stoves. There are wood stoves. There are pipe stoves. Of course there are pellet stoves and plus many more. If you have any of these and one needs a repair you can easily just call the store where you got it and they will give you a number to call to have a professional sent out to your home to repair it for little to no cost.

Many families are now using wood stoves to heat houses because wasting money on heating bills in this economy is not helping anyone out. When walking outside or driving by you will probably see more houses out there with smoke coming out of their chimneys. It is so wonderful to walk outside and smell the wood smoke coming from these houses that it just makes you want one for yourself.

Best Dog Food- Make the Best Choice

The best brand of dog food is a subject that is constantly debated and the wide variety of food types on the market do not help make this choice easy. The final answer will depend on many different factors and may not be the same in every case.

There are dry foods (kibble) and wet foods (canned).  There are hypoallergenic choices, low/no grain, diets for puppies and senior dogs, and even foods that are low in protein or fat or specific health concerns.  Raw diets are another choice growing in popularity.

With all of these versions and choices how can you tell which will work best? If you are not sure about the specific nutritional needs of your dog because of a health issue you should check with your vet before making any changes. Some dogs may have certain diseases or medical problems that may make a special diet necessary.

The age of your pet is one factor in choosing the right food. Puppies tend to need more calories and fat in their diet, as well as large amounts of protein needed to grow and develop. Senior dogs may need lower calorie diets to make up for an aging metabolism and less exercise. Dogs who have difficulty with kidney function may need a protein restricted diet for optimal health and well being.  Diets for health issues are often available only by prescription from a veterinary hospital or online pet pharmacy.

Some pet owners may offer only dry food while others provide only canned wet food or a combination of the two. Most wet best hunting dog food will have a higher protein content than dry versions. An increasing number of individuals offer both wet and dry food at various times to ensure a healthy diet and full nutritional support. Each animal is different, with their own dietary needs according to their health, weight, age, and other factors.  Some breeds and ages are much more active, and they will need added calories and nutrients to make up for the excessive energy and activity. Other dogs have the opposite problem. Throughout the life of the dog the right food may change several times.

There has been a lot of discussion in recent years about the need (or lack thereof) for grains in a dog’s diet.  Grains are a much cheaper ingredient for dog food companies than fresh meats, organ meats, and fruits and vegetables. Kibbles with grains can generally be offered to customers at a lower price, though, so they can be beneficial in that respect.  For pet owners on a tight budget, most grain free diets may be out of reach.

There is no best brand for every dog.  There are a lot of great choices out there depending on your budget, your dog’s specific needs, and what your pet prefers.  The trick is balance all of these considerations to find the best choice for your dog.

Raw food diet for dogs

raw dog foodMany might of heard of the trend of feeding your dog only raw food and steering completely clear of commercially produced dog food. Is the theraw food diet for dogs really a healthier choice, or is it just a trend?

Some call it the “raw food diet” for dogs (and cats) or it is sometimes known by the name BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food). This diet is based on the premise that animals are healthiest when they are eating the way that their digestive systems were designed to eat. Obviously, dogs in the wild do not cook their food before they eat it. However, it goes beyond the fact that the food that you feed your dog should be raw. The whole premise of the BARF diet is to recognize the fact that dogs are carnivores. That means that they are designed (teeth, jaws, digestive system) to eat meat. Do you know how much meat there is in commercially produced dog food? Hardly any at all. Most dry commercial dog food is made of cereals and grains, artificial flavor enhancers, dyes and preservatives to prolong the food’s shelf life and even fillers from the by products of the human food chain.

Let’s use common sense for a moment. Everyone understands that bulk produced dry commercial dog food is cheap and convenient. It has been around since the late 1800′s. The first type of commercial dog food was made of wheat, vegetables and beef blood. It wasn’t readily available until the end of the first Word War when horse meat was really plentiful and cheap as horses were replaced by cars as the primary form of transportation in the western world. Once tin became less available, dry dog food increased in popularity. But close your eyes for a moment. When you imagine your great grandfather’s dog starving and roaming through open fields, do you see him stopping to chew on some wheat, or attacking mice, rabbits and small live animals to eat? Exactly. Given a choice, not many dogs are going to choose an ear o corn over a nice raw steak.  Just because it is is convenient and cheap, it does not mean that bulk dog food is the healthy choice for your dog. A dog’s digestive system has not evolved enough in the last 100 years to be able to process a diet so completely different than it has been digesting for millions of years. It’s just common sense.

Ok so it’s easy enough to argue that dogs should be eating meat, not grains. But raw? Well, in order to make commercial dog food the ingredients are heated up to well over 100 degrees, pretty much killing most of the enzymes and nutrients that your dog needed to get from the food in order to be healthy and thrive.

So what foods are included in a raw food diet for dogs? Primarily meat, fish (yes, fish bones are still a problem!) eggs and some vegetables. Many dog owners who try it for just a month swear that they see a dramatic difference in their dogs coat, energy level and vitality. Many skin issues and ear infections (common side effects of allergic reactions in dogs) disappear within days and do not return. Many owners who have struggled with expensive vet bills, repeated allergy shots and skin treatments for their dogs swear that a raw food diet is the best dog food for dogs with allergies. The strongest proponents of a raw food diet for dogs claim that on average this type of diet can significantly increase their beloved companion’s lifespan.

How to Get Rid of Roaches Fast

Getting rid of roaches can be challenging if you don’t know where to start. These pests are not only persistent but generally very difficult to get rid of. In this article, we’ll cover some household roach killers, the precautions you need to take when using roach and ant killer, as well as how to get rid of roaches without dangerous poisons.

roach and ant killer precautionsCockroaches in your home are certainly an unwelcome sight. If you’ve had the misfortune to see one scurrying across your kitchen floor when you turn on the light, you know how bad it can be. The sight of just one cockroach is cause for concern because you can bet there are more hiding in the cupboards, in your basement, behind your appliances and anywhere else that is dark, wet and cozy.

Roaches are notoriously fast reproducers, so it is very important that you address the problem swiftly and aggressively. And if you’ve already investigated the cost of a professional exterminator and don’t like what you found out, don’t worry. There is plenty that you can do on your own to solve your ugly problem and get your home back into tip-top shape.

This article will examine some of your options. It will spell out some of the commercially available solutions, offer advice about both chemical and non-chemical cockroach killer, go through some basic ant killer and roach killer precautions (because if you’ve got an ant problem you’ll probably be using some of the same solutions) and explain how to get rid of roaches without dangerous poisons.

Roach Control and Sanitation

If you already have cockroaches, you’ll want to think carefully about household sanitation in order to prevent the infestation from becoming worse and stop it from happening again once you get rid of the roaches. If you don’t have cockroaches, you’ll want to think about all of this so that you never have to go past this section and into the solutions.

Remember that cockroaches will live wherever they can find good food and water sources. So don’t leave food lying around. Cockroaches will find it. You may have heard that they can go for days, even weeks, without food. This is true, but they can’t go for very long without water. So make sure you patch leaks and provide adequate ventilations for areas of your home that are prone to high humidity. Cockroaches generally like still, unmoving air, which is why they live behind things. Ensuring good air circulation is part of roach control.

Chemical Solutions to Cockroaches

There are advantages and disadvantages to chemical solutions. They are often the most effective, but they are also the most dangerous, particularly if you have pets or children in your household. If you’re not sure where to buy cockroach killer, ask at your local hardware store.

  • Boric Acid: You may have heard it before and wondered: “does boric acid really kill roaches? The answer is definitely yes. This substance has a variety of uses but is recognized as a very effective insecticide. Sprinkle it in areas where you know cockroaches are frequenting. The roaches ingest the acid and die. It is also toxic to humans and other animals.
  • Insecticides: Sold under a variety of brand names (i.e. Raid), there are many popular products for use against cockroaches. Some of them are sprays which you apply to areas where cockroaches live or pass through, while others are fumigating devices which you set off in a room, allowing the fog to penetrate even remote cracks and corners.
  • Cockroach Bait: Available in gel form, there are normally two ways of delivering the bait, a poisonous substance mixed with substances that are attractive to cockroaches. It can be simply applied to places where you know cockroaches live or travel, or it can come in a small covered bait station which you simply leave out in similar places. Either way, the cockroaches will carry the bait back to their nests and spread the poison among their friends.

Roach and Ant Killer Precautions

The above chemical solutions must be used with great care. First of all, you must read the package and safety instructions very carefully. Use goggles, mask and the best MTB gloves even if these are not recommended, just to ensure you avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and hands.

If you have pets, make sure you are not leaving bait or other chemicals in places where they might get at them. Roaches are difficult to kill, and the chemicals used to do it are pretty strong. If you have children, you must be especially careful not to leave any of these chemicals in places they might reach. Even the covered bait traps might be pried open by curious children.

Finally, ensure that you are very careful applying chemicals in areas where food is prepared or served, as well as in places where clothing is stored. Basically, you want to absolutely minimize the chances of any poisonous substances getting into or onto you.

Non-Chemical Solutions

If you’ve got a major infestation on your hands you’ll probably be best to try the aggressive chemical solutions, but if your cockroach problem is less serious or you simply hate the idea of spreading chemicals in your home, then you do have a few options, including some common house hold roach killer substances.

  • Soap and Water: This is not a long-term solution, but it can kill individual roaches. Like other bugs, they breathe through their skin. Splashing soapy water on them – and it doesn’t really matter what kind of soap – will create a film on their exterior surfaces that basically prevents them from breathing.
  • Sugar and Baking Soda: It’s a common question: “does baking soda kill roaches?” And the answer is yes, when combined with sugar. Mix equal parts of these two powders and leave it out just as you might roach bait.
  • Bay Leaves: Cockroaches can’t stand bay leaves. They’re certainly not a final solution for major bug problems, but try putting them in cockroach pathways or entry points to stop their travels into and through your home.

No More Cockroaches

Back Pain Explained

Back pain is felt in the back and caused by the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures that make up the spine. The pain can be felt either intermittently or constantly. It can stay stagnate in one place or radiate to other areas. The sensation of the pain can be piercing or burning or a dull ache. The pain can be felt in all areas of the back, from the neck to the upper back to the lower back. Some pain may be accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness.

If you experience any of the previously mentioned problems, you are not alone. Back pain is one of the most recurrent complaints for people worldwide. In the United States alone, lower back pain is the fifth most common reason for doctor’s visits. Nine out of ten adults will experience some type of back pain in their lifetimes. Five out of ten working professionals report back pain each year.

Since the spine is a complicated network for muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, pain in some part of the spine is common and often requires a variety of different solutions.

Back pain should be taken sincerely. Although it is not frequently the case, back pain can be a sign of a serious medical problem. This simple guide to explaining back pain should never take the place of professional medical opinion that can be provided to you by a personal physician. Some people prefers to use a massage recliner for back pain to relieve major pains in the back.

The following descriptions of pain should always be brought to the attention of a medical professional:

• Progressive weakness in the legs
• Pain severe enough to interrupt sleep when present with fever or unexplained weight loss
• Pain that occurs after a trauma (such as a fall or a car accident)
• Individuals with medical conditions with high spinal risks (such as osteoporosis or multiple myeloma)

However in most cases, back pain does not usually call for immediate medical involvement. Self-limiting and non-progressive back pain makes up the vast majority of the common back complaints.

Muscle strains and muscle imbalances are often identified as the cause of back pain. Pain from an injury can often remain long after the initial action because of the muscle imbalances. The muscles are forced to work in different, unnatural ways as the individual tries to avoid the pain in the problem area. This causes mechanical problems with the skeleton, building pressure at points on the spine-and pain.

Meniscoid occlusion also causes acute lower back pain, when more mobile regions of the spine become pinched or trapped. What results can be sudden and severe pain. Symptoms include severe lower back pain, also accompanied sometimes by muscle spasms, pain with walking or pain concentrated to a single side of the body.

Back pain among individuals under age 50 can also include spinal disc herniation, isthmic spondylolisthesis or degenerative disc disease. For individuals over age 50, common causes can be osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis. Consult a doctor if you believe you may suffer from any of the mentioned ailments.

There are also many non-anatomical causes that can contribute to back pain. These can include, but are not limited to, repressed anger, stress or depression. Even if an anatomical cause is determined for the back pain, if stress or depression is present, it should be treated additionally. Back pain is also frequently experienced with no underlying anatomical problem.

The goals for treating back pain are:
• To quickly achieve maximum reduction in pain intensity
• Restore individual’s ability to function in everyday activities
• Cope with any residual pain (if present)

There are numerous types of treatments for all kinds of conditions and individuals. Some people find they need to try several treatment options to figure out which works the best for their situation. Only a minority of patients treated for back pain require surgery (estimates range from 1%-10%). Instead, a variety of different techniques are currently used to treat the condition, including: medication, heat therapy, exercises, acupuncture, manipulation and physical therapy.

Massage therapy can also help. Acupressure or pressure point massages (often used in Shiatsu technique) are more beneficial to substantial back pain sufferers than the classic, Swedish-style massage. Many massage recliners are manufactured to be therapy devices, are more powerful than those built just for casual use and vibration. Some are even certified by Chiropractic associations.

Taking Advantage of Window Fans to Cool Your House

It’s a great idea to use window fans to cool your house because it can be a very effective method to provide comfort. Whenever they are used correctly, these fans are able to reduce energy costs because they pull the heat out of your home. Correct positioning of them can easily make a difference in how comfortable the room feels. With just a couple easy steps, you are able to use them to lower your the room’s temperature.

Window fans use fan blades to draw cool air from the outside and remove warm air from the room. Manufacturers of these fans design their units to fit directly into window openings. They also have vertical, as well as horizontal extenders to make them fit better in the window opening. The result ought to be a good airtight fit that maintains the air inside a room circulating.

Some window fans only have one fan which can operate in two different directions. One direction pulls air in from the outdoors into the room which helps to keep it circulating, similar to a typical room fan. The other direction of the fan draws the warm air from the room to the outside. This function might prove helpful for ventilating smoke and also cooking smells.

Window Fans Work Well For Cooling Most Rooms

Another model has two separate fans. These fans work together to pull air in or pull air out, and quite frequently they operate in opposing directions. The end result is a far more reduced room temperature, particularly if you have a thermostat that can be used to regulate the fan’s operation. A comfortable temperature will also be able to be set for night. The fan’s thermostat then determines when to pull in cooler air, or to extract warm air from the room.

Fan manufacturers make features for fans which resemble air conditioners or large room fans. The fan blades that are inside the power window fans are made to rotate at higher speeds and gives more cooling power. Some fans are very noisy when functioning, but a few manufacturers provide a “sleep” setting that decreases the fan’s noise while you sleep.

Fans for windows are made to be set up in standard windows so they are secure. Brackets are included with the fan unit that should be used to provide more stability. A few people make a mistake of using a regular box fan inside the window opening instead of using a fan made for a window opening. This could cause problems, since box fans aren’t made to fit in window frames and may fall out at any time. Aside from the possibility of serious damage to the box fan itself, the fan unit might hit a someone walking by or a vehicle.

Many of these kinds of fans are additionally resistant against some light water exposure, yet they ought to be brought inside the house during more substantial rains and during strong wind storms. Whenever possible, put the fan in your upper level windows or in your attic, so it will draw hot air up from the lower rooms and out of your home. Don’t place your window fans in any windows that are close to garbage cans or anywhere else so it can draw in odors from the outside.

Best sleeping aids in 2018

I still remember those sleepless nights, though they were a while ago. Having sleep problems, especially with the emotional or physical problems that cause it is nothing you forget quickly.

When I found out there wasn’t a site that discusses the issue in a simple, non formal language and mentions existing solutions, I decided to start this blog.

Your bed misses you

Now I am sure all of you sleepless people wish for a one quick magic solution and this is where I have to disappoint you, I don’t have it.

There might be one for you but finding your best sleep aid is a journey, and you know what, even after you find it, it might not do the magic for the guy next to you.

This reminds me of something I read in Penelope’s Leach great book “Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five”. She discusses the crying baby and how to make the crying go away. Her brilliant observation (proven to be true with my own kids) is that once you are done trying every method you can think of, your baby is done crying.

Sleeping is crucial to us. It affects every aspect of our lives, from how we feel to how we look. From how well our immune system functions to how active our metabolism is. Needless to say, it greatly affects our performance, in work and with our family.

To those who have kids, try to remember that morning, after a sleepless night, you went (totally) ballistic over a minor thing your kid was doing, something you might consider absolutely charming and irresistible in most other situations.

To those who don’t have kids (yet), the same applies to your partner, your boss, the guy in the store, your mom calling to nag you – the list is virtually endless.

By now you probably wonder how bad my problem was and what made it go away.

Well, I can say that I had a year of sleeping very little. It was part of a very hard period. I was having emotional issues and on top of that I had big back problems. The change was slow and gradual and involved getting better emotionally while having physical therapy for my back.

I wish that back then I had better access to anti snore pillow about sleeping problems and available sleeping aids. I am sure that at least part of the suffering could have been handled and reduced. Coming back to my base line was great.

Yet, it is not the normal base line, I still like to go to bed late and have a hard time falling asleep.

What helped with further improving my sleep was a more balanced life style (easier said then done) and the ultimate “cure” – having two young and charming kids around the house.

This article will help you find your best sleep aid. It will do so by collecting relevant information and listing relevant products. It will also be a place to discuss and see what other people are going through.

From my experience, knowing other people have the same problems and getting an advice or just sympathy from people who have been through the same problems is already half of the cure.

Classification of Sleep Disorders

If you do not know it by now, sleeping is a widely researched topic. Its importance keeps both the academic and heath system interest high and the research funding keeps flowing in.

One key result of this research is a well developed classification system for sleeping disorders.

I think it is both interesting to know the basics of it and could be beneficiary when looking for the best sleep aid. Below is a brief intro to this classification system, with some references.

Since I am not a researcher or and MD, this by no means intends to be a scientific review, merely a summary that can give you a general idea.

Sleeping disorders are classified by the “International Classification of Sleep Disorders” (ICSD). The ICSD is a resource created by a group of sleep research organization from around the world. One interesting way of classifying sleep disorder is:

  • Dyssomnias
  • Parasomnias
  • Sleep Disorders Associated with Other Disorders

Dyssomnias are problems associated mainly with the process of falling asleep and maintaining a good night sleep, I guess that most of you (and me) fall in this category.

The parasomnias are the problems that happen while we sleep and include anything from grinding your teeth while you sleep to sleep walking.

Teeth grinding while you sleep is more common than you imagine and besides the damage it does to the teeth and joint at the base of the jaw, it (badly) affects the quality of sleeping.

The last group disorders is associated mainly with mental, neurological and medical conditions, this group includes sleep disorders related wtih panic and anxiety disorders, alcoholism and mood disorders.

Another interesting grouping, mainly within the dyssomnias is to intrinsic and extrinsic sleep disorders. The intrinsic sleep disorders include:
